Pacing is time distortion. In a novel you can compress years into a sentence, or stretch three seconds across five pages. Action scenes live and die by your ability to control that distortion — making readers feel every heartbeat when you need them to, then releasing the tension completely before it flatlines.

The Mechanics of Pacing

Pacing is primarily controlled by three elements: sentence length, paragraph length, and the ratio of action to reflection. These tools work whether you're writing a sword duel, a car chase, or a tense standoff.

The Pre-Action Slowdown

Counter-intuitively, the best action scenes often slow down before the action starts. The moment of anticipation is where dread lives:

Don't try to record everything that happens physically. Pick the three to five most important moments and render those in sharp detail. Readers' imaginations will fill in the rest — and their version will always feel more intense than anything you could write.

Pacing by Genre:

  • Thriller/Spy: Staccato sentences, minimal interiority during action, brief sensory flashes
  • Fantasy/Epic: More room for internal stakes during lulls, environment matters, physical exhaustion as subtext
  • Horror: Deliberately slow even during "action" — dread lives in the white space; short sentences reserved for the moment of shock
  • Romance: Physical proximity becomes action; the "chase" is emotional; heartbeat-level interiority throughout

The Breath After

Action scenes need decompression. After a sustained burst of tension, let the prose expand: longer sentences, more interiority, physical sensation returning (trembling hands, ringing silence). This contrast makes the next action beat hit even harder.
