• High interpersonal stakes: Relationships, belonging, acceptance, and the small heartbreaks and joys of daily life are what the story is really about.
• Competent protagonists: Cozy heroes aren't in over their heads. They have skills, knowledge, or a special ability that makes them genuinely useful. Competence is comforting.
• Warm community: A village, a shop, a found family — cozy fantasy always has a web of relationships that feel real and worth returning to.
• Sensory richness: The smell of baked bread, the sound of rain on a thatched roof, the weight of a familiar mug — cozy fantasy is a genre of texture and comfort.

Building the Cozy World

• Create a home base that feels genuinely cozy — specific, sensory, and safe. The bookshop, the bakery, the apothecary. Name everything.
• Populate it with a cast of distinct, affectionate supporting characters — regulars, neighbors, the person who always knows the local gossip
• Give the magic system a domestic, everyday quality — magic that helps with cooking, gardening, healing, communication
• Seasons and weather are important: autumn and winter are natural cozy seasons; mark them with rituals and communal events

Conflict Without Threat: How Cozy Fantasy Creates Tension

Cozy fantasy still needs story tension — it just can't tip into genuine dread. Use:

• Interpersonal misunderstandings that feel genuinely consequential to the characters
• Problems that require community cooperation to solve
• Personal growth arcs where the protagonist has to confront a fear or belief
• A mystery whose solution reveals something meaningful rather than threatening
