Second world fantasy — entirely invented worlds with no portal to Earth, no contemporary setting — is the oldest and most demanding of the fantasy subgenres. Tolkien, Le Guin, Jordan, Sanderson: the masters of this form built complete cosmologies before they wrote a single scene. This generator and guide helps you build the same foundations systematically, so your world feels lived-in rather than invented-for-the-plot.

The Three Pillars of a Compelling Secondary World

Building Your Magic System

Every magic system has: Source (where power comes from), Limits (what it cannot do), Cost (what using it requires), and Rules (how it works consistently). The more rigidly defined your magic system, the more you can use it as a plot engine. The less defined, the more it functions as atmosphere and wonder.

World-Building Layers (Build in This Order)

  1. Geography: Continent shape, climate zones, major rivers and mountains. Geography determines everything else: trade routes, cultural isolation, political borders, where wars happen.
  2. Economics: What is scarce? What is abundant? Who controls scarce resources? Every fantasy political conflict is fundamentally economic at its root.
  3. History: Two or three major historical events that shaped the current world. A collapsed empire, a god-war, a great migration. Current tensions are historical wounds.
  4. Power Structures: Who rules, and how did they get there? Who wants their power? What keeps the current structure stable, and what's destabilizing it?
  5. Culture and Religion: What do people believe? What do they celebrate? What do they fear? Culture should be specific enough that characters have distinct worldviews based on where they're from.
  6. Magic (if applicable): Once the above are established, design magic that is entangled with the existing structures — magic that's controlled by the ruling class, forbidden to certain groups, tied to the geography.
