A well-built story world feels real before the first character steps into it. It has gravity, history, and rules — and the reader senses all of it even in the details that never make it to the page. This comprehensive worldbuilding checklist, paired with StoryDev's visual canvas, ensures you've covered every layer of your world before writing begins.
Physical World
Start with the material reality of your world:
- Geography: continents, countries, cities, natural features — and how they shape the people who live there
- Climate and weather: how does it affect daily life, agriculture, trade, and conflict?
- Natural resources: what's scarce? What's abundant? Who controls it?
- Flora and fauna: what's unique to this world? What role do non-human creatures play?
- Scale: how big is your story's physical footprint? Is it one city or a whole planet?
Political & Power Structures
Every world has a power structure. Defining yours prevents plot inconsistencies:
- Form of government: monarchy, democracy, theocracy, corporate oligarchy, tribal council?
- Who holds real power vs. nominal power — are they the same people?
- How is power transferred? Inheritance, election, conquest, divine right?
- What are the major political factions, and what does each want?
- History of conflict: wars, revolutions, occupations that still shape the present
Worldbuilding Details That Create Depth:
- A food or trade item that reveals the economy in one detail
- A slang term or insult that implies a whole social history
- A law that exists because of something terrible that happened once
- A holiday whose original meaning has been distorted or forgotten
Culture & Society
Culture is what characters breathe. Build it so it shapes behavior naturally:
- Social hierarchies: class, caste, profession, family name — what determines status?
- Gender and family structures: how are they organized and enforced?
- Religion and belief: what do people worship, fear, or doubt? How does it touch daily life?
- Arts, music, storytelling: what does this culture celebrate and preserve?
- Taboos and manners: what can't be said, done, or touched — and what happens if you do?
Magic, Technology, or Special Systems
If your world has a special system (magic, advanced tech, supernatural rules), it needs its own checklist:
- What can it do? Be specific — vague magic creates plot holes.
- What are its costs and limitations? Power without limits isn't interesting.
- Who has access? Is it inherited, learned, purchased, or given?
- How does society organize itself around this system? It would touch everything.
- What happens when the system fails or is abused?
Economy & Daily Life
Characters live in economies, even when the story isn't about money:
- How do people earn a living? What are the dominant industries?
- Currency and trade: what's valuable and why?
- What does a normal day look like for a commoner? For an elite?
- What do people eat, wear, and dream about?
