Writing Fanfiction: Craft, Canon, and Making It Your Own

Fanfiction is not a lesser form of fiction. It is a training ground for professional writers, a space for genuine literary experimentation, and a community built on passionate engagement with story. Some of the most technically skilled prose on the internet lives in fanfiction archives. The craft challenges are real — and in some ways harder than original fiction, because readers already know the characters, and any false note will be noticed immediately.

Character Voice Is Everything

Readers of fanfiction come with an intimate knowledge of the characters. Getting voice wrong — making a character sound like a different person than the one readers know — breaks the fiction instantly. Before you write a word of dialogue, spend time with canon: how does this character phrase things? What do they notice? What do they never talk about directly? What's their relationship to honesty, to silence, to vulnerability?

• Read canon dialogue aloud until you can hear the character's rhythm
• Note the specific things the character cares about and how that shapes their speech
• Distinguish between what the character says and what they mean — and be consistent with how that gap works in canon

The Canon Contract

Fanfiction exists in relationship to canon — either faithful to it or deliberately departing from it. Both approaches are valid, but you must choose consciously and signal clearly. AU (Alternate Universe) stories need to establish their departure point. Canon-compliant stories need to honor established events and character development. "Divergence" fic should be clear about where the fork point is. Readers will follow you anywhere if you're honest about where you're going.

Fanfiction's Unique Freedoms

Because readers already know the characters, you can skip vast amounts of setup that original fiction requires. You can drop directly into emotional complexity. You can write missing scenes, alternate outcomes, quiet moments that canon never had time for. These are fanfiction's gifts — don't waste them on plot summary or recapping canon events. Write what canon couldn't.

Finding Your Voice Within the World

The best fanfiction has a distinct authorial voice — it doesn't just imitate the source material's style. Your perspective, your preoccupations, your way of seeing these characters is what makes your fanfiction yours. The characters belong to the source; the story belongs to you. Write it like that.
