The saggy middle hits when your story loses drive after the first act. Characters wander, stakes fade, and readers skim or quit. Use this checklist to diagnose your draft: read through each sign, mark matches in your manuscript, then apply the fix.
Work one item at a time. Revise a chapter or two per sign. Track changes to see momentum build. Aim to cut 10-20% of middle word count while raising tension.
1. Filler scenes with no plot progress
Characters chat about weather, shop for clothes, or eat meals that change nothing.
Fix: List your middle scenes. Cut any without a story beat advancing plot, character, or world. Merge survivors or replace with conflict.
2. Protagonist reacts instead of acts
Bad guys push events; hero dodges or whines without counter-moves.
Fix: Give protagonist 3 active goals per act two sequence. Make each choice force antagonist reaction.
3. Stakes stay vague or low
Early threats like 'world ends' shrink to 'hero feels bad' without fresh risks.
Fix: List 5 worsening consequences per subplot. Tie each to a deadline or personal loss in next 3 scenes.
4. Side plots meander without payoff
Subplots like romance or buddy comic relief drift, unrelated to main arc.
Fix: Map each side plot to intersect main plot twice in the middle. Cut strands that don't amplify core conflict.
5. Pacing drags with long descriptions
Pages of setting details or backstory dumps halt forward motion.
Fix: Slash descriptions to one paragraph max per scene. Weave rest into dialogue or action beats.
6. Antagonist vanishes or weakens
Villain lurks off-page; obstacles feel random, not personal.
Fix: Schedule antagonist appearance or proxy threat every 5,000 words. Escalate their plan to corner hero.
7. Character arcs stall or repeat
Hero repeats same flaw without growth steps or setbacks.
Fix: Outline arc beats: flaw exposure, failed change, partial win, big test. Space one per 10% of middle.
8. No clear midpoint shift
Story drifts past halfway with no reversal, false victory, or new info.
Fix: Pinpoint 50% word count. Insert scene where hero wins small but learns antagonist's edge, flipping to underdog.
9. Scenes end on flat notes
No cliffhangers or twists; readers close book mid-chapter.
Fix: End 80% of middle scenes with a question, reveal, or disaster. Use 'but/therefore' chain to link to next.
10. Tension plateaus, no rising action
Obstacles repeat scale; no build to act three crisis.
Fix: Graph tension line from midpoint to end. Add 2-3 spikes per 10k words via betrayals, discoveries, or ticking clocks.
