Steampunk is the genre that asks: what if the Industrial Revolution went differently — bigger, stranger, stranger-powered? It's Victorian aesthetics married to speculative science, brass gears married to social critique, the clockwork beautiful married to the cost of who builds it and who breaks under the weight of building it. The best steampunk is never just about the airships. It's about what the airships mean — who can ride them and who fuels them.
What Makes Steampunk Work
The trap of steampunk is aesthetic without substance: the goggles, the corsets, the gears decorating everything. Aesthetic steampunk is costume; story steampunk is a world with internal logic that generates genuine conflict. The difference:
- Technology as power structure: Who controls the steam engines, the aether cables, the difference engines controls the world. Your technology isn't just cool — it's political. Who owns the infrastructure? Who works in it? Who's excluded from it?
- Historical pressure: Victorian-adjacent settings carry the real history of that period: colonialism, class rigidity, women's constraints, the beginnings of labor movements. Good steampunk doesn't ignore this — it engages with it, often through the technology's social implications.
- The cost of progress: Steam-powered advancement has victims. The coal miners, the factory workers, the children in the gears. Stories about the wonders of the age are more interesting when they reckon with what those wonders cost.
Steampunk Technology Concepts
- Airships and aero-fleets: The classic — but explore who gets to travel by air, who can only travel by rail, who walks. Social stratification from altitude.
- Analytical engines and automata: Mechanical computing and artificial beings. The labor questions are immediate: what happens to workers when the automata can do their jobs? And what are the automata's rights?
- Aether and energy: An alternative energy source (aether, luminiferous gas, tidal clockwork) with different geopolitical implications than coal — it might favor different nations, different landscapes, different bodies.
- Bio-mechanical hybrids: Characters who are part machine — medical prosthetics, experimental enhancement, industrial accident survivors. The body as technology.
- Communication technology: Telegraph networks, pneumatic mail, aetheric transmission. Who controls information controls power.
Story Templates
- The Sky Pirate and the Engineer: A privateer airship captain needs the only engineer who can fix a stolen aetheric engine — who happens to be a patent clerk for the government they're evading. Forced partnership, escalating stakes, the question of who the technology really belongs to.
- The Automaton's Case: An analytical engine trained to process legal cases starts producing verdicts that no one can explain — and which are consistently in favor of the city's poor. Someone is trying to shut it down. Someone else is trying to protect it. The automaton is trying to survive long enough to be heard.
- The Expedition: A scientific expedition to a continent that was supposed to be uninhabited discovers it isn't — and that the empire's plans for the territory have been underway for decades without anyone in the expedition knowing. A scientist, an explorer, and an indigenous guide have to decide what to do with what they know.
- The Revolution from Below: A factory worker who repairs the machines that replaced her colleagues begins to understand the machines' vulnerabilities. A labor organizer wants to use that knowledge. A company agent suspects something. The industrial sabotage story where the saboteur is the protagonist.
Steampunk Settings Beyond Victorian Britain
- Ottoman steampunk: Constantinople at the intersection of East and West, steam power arriving alongside political transformation
- African steampunk: Pre-colonial African kingdoms with their own technological traditions encountering or developing steam technology on their own terms
- American frontier steampunk: The westward expansion rewritten with different technological infrastructure — and different power dynamics
- Underwater steampunk (dieselpunk adjacent): Submersible cities, deep-sea mining, the politics of the ocean floor
